This was Mavericks first official month in training. He has settled well into kennel life and has become a hot commodity with all the dogs, making lots of new friends.
We kept the first 2 weeks very low key, going on lots of free walks to places such as the wetlands and Amy Gillet bike track. He was very happy to meet lots of different dogs on the walks and has shown an interest in birds.
We have started to advance into some smaller main streets such as Stirling. Maverick has coped well with this and has not been nervous around traffic or people. His heeling is excellent and he slowly plods along next to me.
In his sound training we have started him off with the basics. He started by coming in and getting socialised with the Training Centre. He got to meet the centre birds Dippy and Egg, as well as the cats Pants and Penelope. He is very friendly with Penelope and they play together whenever he finishes his training.
He has now started working sound to sound which means he is getting a treat for running to find where the sound is. He was a little slow with the initial uptake of this but once he has done a task once it clicks in his head and he works it out nicely on his second attempt.
He has learned how to touch where he jumps up to me with 2 paws. This was a tough one to teach him as he had beautiful manners ingrained in him where he did not jump up for attention, then had to learn that it is ok to jump up when told. He now enjoys practising this at the start of each session.
