This month Maverick has been experiencing some new and exciting things as he has now started to venture inside some low level shops. Like a superstar he strutted through Kmart mall as if he owned the place, being incredibly laid back the whole time. As we were walking out of the shops there was a large German Shepard (Police dog) who saw him and started to bark and growl. Maverick true to his laid back nature looked at the other dog and completely ignored him staying on his best behaviour. He has not been nervous in any environment that I have put him into so when we were invited by Adelaide Uni to attend their Stress Less on the Lawn event for the students to come and pat the dogs, Maverick was the first boy I thought to bring along.
He was in his element the whole event, receiving so many pats from students (while laying down mind you). He enjoyed this so much that the following day he went to visit his sponsoring Club so I could give a talk on what Maverick will do as a Hearing Dog. He again got the pleasure of being fawned over by the kids and soaked up every minute of attention.
He has advanced in his sound training this month and had recently moved up into working 3rd leg meaning he will now hear the sound going off, locate it, come back and touch me and then lead me back to the sound. He was so eager with this that he was actually running in each section so that he could get the treats faster. He has also recently learned how to alert to the smoke alarm. This is usually a little tough for the dogs as they have to ignore the sound and come right to me to touch and drop, yet Maverick had no issues and picked it up very quickly.
