This week, members of the Lions Club of the City of Adelaide were honoured to return to Government House for one of our most treasured annual traditions — the Lions Children of Courage Awards.
Since the program began in 1989, more than 700 remarkable children across South Australia have been recognised through these awards. Each child has their own story of resilience, bravery, and strength — stories that inspire everyone who hears them.
Hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and Mr Bunten, the evening was a heartfelt celebration of young people living with disability. These children face daily challenges with determination and courage, showing all of us what true strength looks like.
The awards also acknowledge the parents, carers, teachers, and loved ones who stand beside them — providing the love, encouragement, and support that help these children shine. Every child nominated is celebrated for their unique achievements and receives a personalised medallion presented by Her Excellency.
Each year, our judging panel takes on the difficult task of selecting one special recipient for an additional award — a decision that is never easy. This year, we extend our sincere thanks to our judges Libby Kosmala OAM, Patricia Brougham AM, and Lions members Stephanie Lewis and Marilyn Pederick for their time, compassion, and commitment to recognising these extraordinary young people.
We’re also grateful to the many organisations and special schools across South Australia who continue to support children living with disabilities and nominate them for these awards. Your involvement ensures this celebration of courage continues to grow and inspire.
Honouring a Remarkable Young Man
This year’s ceremony also included a very special moment of remembrance for Alexander Piffl, a young man whose courage and positivity touched countless lives. Earlier this year, Her Excellency, along with President Andrew Stacey and Lions Children of Courage Awards Coordinator, Petrea Stacey, had the privilege of presenting Alexander with a Lions Children of Courage Award at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital.
Sadly, Alexander passed away only a few weeks later. His family joined us at Government House to honour his memory — a moving reminder of the strength, kindness, and unbreakable spirit that define these awards.
Alexander embodied everything the Lions Children of Courage Awards stand for, and we thank his family for being with us to share this special moment.
About the Lions Children of Courage Awards
The Lions Children of Courage Awards were created to recognise the often-overlooked achievements of children living with disability — celebrating their determination to overcome challenges and lead inspiring lives.
These awards not only highlight the courage of these young people but also promote understanding and compassion throughout our community.
The Lions Club of the City of Adelaide is proud to continue this important tradition — one that reminds us every year of the incredible strength found in even the smallest hearts.
