We recently welcomed Maverick into training at ALHD on 20th July. This was a hard day for his foster carer and family that have spent the last 8 months including Maverick in as many outings as possible as well as having him as part of their family life each day at home.
Barb and Colin will make sure that they give their two pet dogs some extra attention when Maverick isn’t living there, as they too have bonded very well with Maverick.
We have met up many times in busy main streets and outside shopping areas. Each time Maverick has been confident throughout, even with buses pulling up right next to us with their loud brakes and walking over all different surfaces. I’m confident he will do very well with his ‘further education’.
He has also been around different farm animals and frequently visited a friend in a nursing home. We are incredibly grateful for all the help our volunteer foster carers provide to start the foster pups on their journey to become Hearing Assistance Dogs.
When Maverick starts training, I will make sure that he goes into a yard with one other dog that he will enjoy playing with. This way he won’t get a chance to miss Barb and Colin and he will go to bed that night happy and tired. Maverick will bring his bedding with him to have with him at night. The familiar scent will help him to settle in quickly to his new surroundings.
Actually, Maverick recently stayed a few nights at ALHD and he took everything in his stride, so I’m sure it will be the same when he starts training. Barb and Colin will have the opportunity to visit him when in training and see his progress.
